Three young ladies who have made a name for themselves making beautifully crafted jewellery from recycled paper.

Francesca of Frucci Design has created a range of elegant jewellery based around folded paper.  A biochemist by profession, Francesca describes herself as 50% scientist and 50% artist – but her dream is to create her jewellery full time.

She uses paper from a variety of sources – recycled, vintage, handmade, but also some new and from old maps, magazines, catalogs, newsletters, coupons, and her favourite – shopping bags.  Her technique, she says, is a mixture of old and new, and she likes to mix and match different and unrelated approaches in her pieces.

Holly Ann Mitchell of Newspaper Jewellery made her first piece as a University project for which the brief was to create a piece of jewellery without using any traditional materials.  She chose to work with newspaper, as the bright colours and patterns of the Sunday comics appealed to her.  She has been making paper jewellery ever since, winning several awards and having her work featured in a number of publications.

Liz Hamman is a  mixed media artist from Macclesfield near Manchester in the UK.   She combines books, sculpture and textile/fibre art in her work, which is inspired by geometry, growth patterns in nature and repetitive structures and processes. Using only old books and maps that have been used, never new ones, she says –

“I like to produce work that is small and tactile which is why much of my work is wearable, in the form of jewellery.  Paper may not seem like the obvious choice as a material for jewellery due to its fragile and ephemeral nature.  I am interested in the idea that these qualities reflect the nature of the human form itself and also question the nature of ‘value’ in the society we live in.”
