Now here’s a sofa I could live with 🙂  Via Lattea showcased this range of eco-friendly furniture designed by Mario Bellini and Meritalia, at this year’s Milan Furniture Fair.  Made from recycled grain and sugar sacks, the frame is made from steel mesh and they’re  filled with air and lit from within by an LED light.  Could your living room handle one of these?

The Deptford Project Café on Deptford High Street in London, is a 35 tonne 1960’s South East Trains carriage which has been converted into a café/bistro, designed by Studio Myerscough, as the first part of the plans to completely regenerate the area around Deptford Train Station and the old victorian carriage ramp.  It will be the heart of a new public space with a weekend creative industries market, shops and galleries.

Here are two fabulous examples of worn out, drab old furniture being brought back to life with a little TLC… (aka from Eeew to Ooooh! :P)

First – Claires’ boring, old fashioned telephone table… she took one of the most un-hip items of furniture imaginable, and made it into a bright modern piece that anyone would be proud to have in their hallway.

Next, Eily found herself in posession of various pieces of furniture when she bought an old cottage, and among them was this pretty scary fireside chair.  Several layers of fabric had to come off, but what an elegant transformation – it’s barely recognisable as the same chair!

Santa Monica based craftsman, Michael Yonke aka Upcycler has created his range of exquisitely handcrafted furniture, art and interiors by repurposing and upcycling wood, metal and glass.  He uses 90 – 99% reclaimed locally sourced deconstruction materials, which he transforms into ” objects with higher end use value that will endure and inspire for centuries”.

Sandhi Schimmel Gold creates amazingly detailed mosaic art from tiny pieces of discarded menu items, junk mail postcards, business cards, old greeting cards, cruise itineraries, gallery openings…

In her own words – “It is my mission to create fine art from a variety of materials and messages. I upcycle the materials advertisers use to bombard society with their version of beauty – in images and verbiage.  I believe we are an aggregate of tiny bits: who we are and where we’ve been – or who we want or pretend to be. The tesserae, the “tiles” I create represent those bits in color and texture and meaning”.

Every once in a while I stumble upon an artist or designer whose work just makes me beam from ear to ear – in this case it’s British textile designer Zoe Murphy.  Zoe’s repurposed mid century pieces and vintage textiles are printed with imagery inspired by her beloved home town of Margate – her ethos is ‘love what belongs to you’.

She has already had her work shortlisted for the BBC New Designer Of The Year Award, and exhibited at Free Range design shows, New Designers 2008 and The Old Town Gallery in Margate, even though she only graduated from university last year.  I’ll be keeping up to date with her work on her blog, as I can’t wait to see more from her.
