Whirlpool and Elmar have unveiled the Green Living Kitchen at the Milan Furniture Fair.   The concept was designed by Ludovica and Roberto Palomba who describe it as “a new kitchen dimension in which technology and ecology meet and blend in a convivial and wellness oriented setting”.

Using Whirlpool Sixth Sense technology and Elmars’ natural high temperature treated wood, it incorporates a living plant and herb wall, and centres around a large wooden table which becomes the heart of the kitchen.  The appliances re-use water and heat, significantly reducing energy consumption and cost.

Every once in a while I stumble upon an artist or designer whose work just makes me beam from ear to ear – in this case it’s British textile designer Zoe Murphy.  Zoe’s repurposed mid century pieces and vintage textiles are printed with imagery inspired by her beloved home town of Margate – her ethos is ‘love what belongs to you’.

She has already had her work shortlisted for the BBC New Designer Of The Year Award, and exhibited at Free Range design shows, New Designers 2008 and The Old Town Gallery in Margate, even though she only graduated from university last year.  I’ll be keeping up to date with her work on her blog, as I can’t wait to see more from her.

As the move to my brand new house draws ever closer, I’ve been diligently researching all kinds of projects in preparation for the summers’ inevitable DIY-fest :).  First on the list will be shelving, so here’s a little round up of tutorials that caught my eye.

These breathtaking lightshades were made by artist Julia Lohmann on site at Galleria Nilufar –

“For the Saloni di Mobile in Milano we built a workshop in Galleria Nilufar.
Instead of finished products we brought 8 kg of kelp from Japan and Ireland and our tools with us and produced the finished pieces in the gallery. There was a real buzz about the new material and our visitors were very excited to be able to see the whole working process and touch the material in its different stages of production: dried, re-hydrated, stretched, varnished, unvarnished.”

British artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster use piles of rubbish, accumulated by themselves and collected from London streets, to create their shadow art.  Each piece is carefully assembled so that when lit from behind, the resulting shadows depict surprising and accurate figures, often of the artists themselves.
